House with a spiral design on a challenging shape of land
Oiso, Kanagawa, Japan
- Type: Residence
- Total floor area: 112.80 sq. meter
- Design: Architectural and Interior
- Structure: Wood
The location overlooks Enoshima along the Sagami Bay and Yokosuka Peninsula in the distant view to the east. In closer proximity, the city of Hiratsuka spreads out in to view. There was little choice in the design for the building, as the land was in a triangular shape with two levels and the road in close proximity. The client chose the land for the scenery, over the fact that it was situated in an inconvenient location. The spiral shape of the building was carefully designed to meet the requirements of the client and the restrictions of the land. The interior was unified with use of dark colors, to prevent the sunlight from reflecting too strongly inside the house from the large window. Passing through a dimly lit space and traveling up the stairway, a burst of light greets the eye. For a moment it is blinding and takes some time for the eyes to adjust. And then all of a sudden the horizon appears. This view is unforgettable with the lush green forest and the blue of the Sagami Bay. We can easily imagine a family basking in nature in this home.
