MaOL

MaOL is located in an area surrounded by nature overlooking Sagami Bay to the east and and a vast forest to the west and Mt. Fuji in the distance. In this place the wind travels and the scent of the ocean is in the air. The client requested a house in which the scenery and atmosphere could be enjoyed to the fullest. The concept of this home was to create new discoveries within the rooms when the sky changed with the seasons or when the light filtered through. By tracing an outline for the exterior of the building to fit the shape of the land created curves in the design. The interior space also became angular producing unique shadows and adding depth to the rooms. The window sizes ranging in various sizes that appear as if they have been placed randomly, are openings that were carefully calculated. Factors such as daily activities, looking at the house from the outside, walking through the house, the eye level view when sitting, the angle that the light filters through were thoroughly simulated. The partially closed off bay windows made of mortar trim the view of the scenery and serves to emphasize the shadows in the house, while giving the exterior a dramatic look.
