Hotoku Shrine, with a long and honorable history is located in Odawara and is dedicated to Sontoku Ninomiya (a historical figure in Japan). It was the wishes of the Guji, the chief priest of the Hotoku shrine, to create an open recreational space for the local citizens. The space includes a flower shop, patisserie shop, cafe, and coin laundry. The existing structure and exterior wall of the central kitchen were preserved, while the interior and exterior design underwent a renovation. The use of simple materials such as wood, tiles, and plaster walls, with earth tone colors make it a place where people of all ages can feel comfortable. The tram installed on the premises is called a ‘chinchin train’ that used to run in Odawara in the early Showa period, and later in Nagasaki has come back home to its’ birthplace.
